Zula is a London-based photographer and videographer who creates documentary work focused on migration, identity, and LGBTQI+ communities. Biography
Zula is a London-based documentary photographer, specialising in community-based portraiture and documentary storytelling. She focuses on themes of migration, Eastern Europe, and the LGBTQI+ communities, drawing inspiration from her Polish heritage and upbringing. Through her photography, Zula aims to amplify voices often overlooked, using an intentional approach to explore the complexity of identity and the power of human connection.
She works closely with communities to create intimate portraiture that reflects their stories and experiences. Whether through multimedia, film, digital, or analogue photography, her projects prioritise authenticity and emotional depth. Zula’s collaborative approach to portraiture fosters authentic, empowering representations, using photographic storytelling to amplify diverse human experiences.
Her work has been exhibited internationally and published in prominent outlets. Zula’s accolades include the AOP Talent Award, PDN Award, and the Getty Images Grant. As a recipient of the MEAD Fellowship, she has focused on documenting gender identity in Eastern Europe, bringing attention to often marginalised communities in the region. She has also received the Centre for British Photography Grant and won the Earth Photo Moving Image Award.
Zula holds a BA in English Literature in French and an MRes in Postcolonial French Literature from the University of Warwick, alongside an MA in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography from the London College of Communication. Her work has been featured in exhibitions like OPEN20 Moving Image, Winchester Gallery, the Enjoy Museum of Art in Beijing, Four Corners in London, and Medium Gallery in Bratislava.
Zula’s photography has been published in well-known outlets such as the BBC, The Guardian, the Rolling Stone, and Bloomberg. Her work has earned nominations for prestigious awards like the BJP Portrait of Humanity, RPS 164, Budapest International Foto Awards, Moscow International Foto Award, Prix Levallois, and Leica Magazine’s Photojournalist of the Year.
As a co-founder of Rethinking Eastern Europe, a platform dedicated to supporting Central and Eastern European creatives, Zula is passionate about elevating diverse voices within the creative community. She also teaches photography at Kingston University, where she is committed to fostering the next generation of visual storytellers.
Her work continues to attract the attention of global brands and magazines. Zula is currently open for commissions and offers print sales upon request.
